Authentic communication has gentleness and clarity. No one likes to feel used or manipulated. It ruins the bond of trust. You connect more by being honest and transparent than calculating and shrewd. When you come from your heart, there is no patronizing or public condemnation, no sarcastic jabs or put-downs. It doesn’t matter how polished your communication skills are; what makes the difference is how authentic you are. People want to know and feel the real you. You don’t need to be a slick communicator in order to move people—what’s most effective is your authentic expression. It’s said that Richard Branson froze the first time he was asked to give a speech, but despite being scared to death, he was still an effective communicator. Connecting with people is the key to effective communication, and that is done by coming from your heart.
