History

Center for Spiritual Living is the Oldest Religious Science Center in Texas:

In 1963, the Center received its charter from the Centers for Spiritual Living (formely United Church of Religious Science). In its long and varied history, four other churches have begun as seedlings from the Center for Spiritual Living Dallas.

Center for Spiritual Living's Dynamic Growth:

In 1998, after serving as Interim Minister twice for the Center, Rev. Dr. Petra Weldes came on board as the full time Senior Minister. Since then, a dynamic growth from 20 to 300 congregants on a Sunday, the expansion of the Youth and Family Ministry from serving 1 child (the minister's son) to 55 kids from ages 0-18, and the creation of the Spiritual Development Institute, as well as expansion of Community Service activities, has been phenomenal.

A visionary who grows spiritually- minded leaders, Rev. Petra continues to inspire, ignite and illuminate many through weekly services and teachings. In 2005,our Education Department expanded classes at the Center while booking nationally acclaimed speakers such as Michael Bernard Beckwith, Neale Donald Walsch, Bob Proctor, Iyanla Vanzant, Alan Cohen, Rev. Mary Manin Morrissey, and others.

Creating the Building:

When you enter The Center, what you see beyond the painted walls and feel beyond the palpable joy is the love, dedication, vision, prayer and financial commitment of a congregation whose sweat, laughter, and unshakable belief fills every nook and cranny of the space.

The Center's current home, since 2005, is a product of the visioning process manifested through the enormous volunteer hours which helped finish out the place under the direction of our Construction Manager and Practitioner, Susan Pahnke, RScP. Day in and day out, for over 4 months, hundreds of volunteers literally created and painted each wall, laid each tile and laid down base boards, hung windows and doors and finished out the building. Alongside each other, congregants bonded deeper as a family and infused the entire space with prayer and love. This was done for our community and those yet to come.

The landlord provided all the inspectable work, including rough framing of the walls, all electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, the elevator and exterior doors. In addition, a 2 story sanctuary was created when the landlord agreed to remove 1000 sq feet of the second floor over the sanctuary platform area. The Center is a demonstration of a community united in faith, prayer and moving in the direction of our dreams.

Stained Glass Window in the Sanctuary:

The stained glass windows located in the sanctuary were inspired by The Science of Mind and Spirit Teaching Symbol and were envisioned by Practitioner Noreen Maulsby Judge, RScP for a previous location. Over thirty volunteers were mobilized to create the windows, only two of whom had ever done stained glass work before. The major criterion for the original installation of the windows was that they be removable. The windows were completed and dedicated in the Spring of 1996 and moved to their new location in May of 2005.

The "V" shape - from the teaching symbol used by Science of Mind is visible in the white arc. Once completed, it would be part of a circle, 38 feet tall. That makes it the largest Science of Mind teaching symbol in the world.
