Whether You Want to Walk Across Fire or Not
Dr John Waterhouse from CSL Asheville is our Spiritual, Shamanic Facilitator*
Firewalking is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of glowing hot wood coals. If you’ve ever watched a firewalking event on TV or in a movie, you’ve seen the process begin with a large, bed of glowing coals that often flame up during the walk. The bed is commonly about 4 feet wide and 10-12 feet long. Yes, the hot coals are real and people actually do walk across them with bare feet.
Firewalking has been practiced by many people and cultures all across the planet for millennia. Earliest known references date back to circa 1200 BCE. Firewalking originated as a rite of passage to test an individual’s courage, commitment and/or faith.
Each firewalker makes his or her way across the coals as though it were magic, but this is not trickery. There are no gimmicks in firewalking. It’s not as though firewalkers soak their feet in water before going across the coals or that an extreme physical reaction happens where feet are suddenly soaked in sweat. The bare feet of those who walk on fire really do press down into the 1200+ degree coals. Each firewalker creates their own experience varying from extreme trepidation to exhilaration.
The purpose of firewalking is to create an experience where participants have the opportunity to face a very real and daunting physical challenge. When walking on fire, each one arrives at the other side with a bold new perspective and an enthusiasm that supports them in living their lives more boldly. Nothing accelerates personal empowerment and group bonding more effectively than this type of experience. Absolutely nothing!
*In 2004, Dr John became a Certified Firewalk Instructor through the Firewalking Institute of Research and Education with Founder, Tolly Burkan. Since becoming certified, he has facilitated numerous firewalking seminars for his community, CSL Asheville, and others throughout the United States.
